Description &
Responsibilities
The role of the perioperative nurse or operating room (OR) nurse is to provide care for patients before, during and after surgery. OR travel nursing job duties also include patient education, circulating nurse and/or scrub nurse, and potentially RN first assistant or operating room director (with additional training). Circulating OR nurses work within the operating suite but outside of the sterile field; scrub OR nurses handle and prepare operating instruments and equipment within the sterile field. Perioperative nurses work in every type of healthcare facility.
Education &
Training
Operating room nurse jobs require the successful completion of certificate programs that initially qualify RNs for perioperative nursing positions. These generally take a year to complete. Preparation in critical care units and emergency rooms are encouraged in order to gain program acceptance. After two years (2,400 hours) of perioperative experience, clinicians are eligible to take the voluntary certificate exam in order to qualify for full-fledged OR nurse employment opportunities.
Salary &
Benefits

Operating room nurse salary rates vary based on experience, location, and training, and currently average approximately $84,200 per year, according to 2012 Nursing Salary Survey from ADVANCE for Nurses. Higher operating room nurse salaries are frequently available to clinicians with advanced skills and/or specializations.
