Job Description & Requirements

*Medical Surgical Unit* The Unit Manager works under the supervision of the Nursing Director. The Unit Manager will utilize critical thinking to support decision making in relation to clinical issues. The Unit Manager will function as a professional role model, serve as a clinical resource and assist with the education and development of nursing staff. The Unit Manager will coordinate and facilitate the unit performance improvement plan in conjunction with the Nursing Director. The Unit Manager utilizes Regional West Medical Standards of Behavior when communicating with the internal and external customers and actively participates in Service Excellence and Shared Leadership. Primary Duties: Utilizes critical thinking in the application of knowledge and clinical skills to facilitate staff development to achieve appropriate patient outcomes.Add comments Utilizes decision-making skills in determining the degree of involvement in patient care; intervening at critical and /or key points, in a calm and effective manner, to achieve safe clinical outcomes Collaborates with the Nursing Director and scheduling committee to maintain appropriate staffing levels and contribute to the monitoring of fiscal and supply resources Utilizes unit staffing model as a guideline and adjusts staffing levels based on acuity, census and staff experience. Responsible for final approval of all employee schedules In collaboration with Nursing Director monitors vacant employee positions and ensures posting of positions in accordance with budgeted FTE and staffing guidelines Maintains open communication with the Nursing Director and other supervisory staff Assists with personnel management including hiring decisions, employee coaching, and corrective actions Supports an environment conducive to learning and professional growth by functioning as a role model, resource person, and mentor Identifies, develops, manages, and monitors individualized competency based orientation plans, annual competencies, and staff education Participates in completion of the performance evaluations for staff, in conjunction with the Nursing Director Demonstrates Regional West Medical Center’s Standards of Behavior when communicating with internal and external customers Provides staff counseling for behavioral and/or performance issues as needed according to Regional West Medical Center Standards of Behavior, job descriptions, and established policies and procedures, in conjunction with Human Resources Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, and in-service meetings and workshops Supports Shared Leadership at the unit and divisional level Contributes to an effective team environment by working with others in ways that encourage each person’s contribution Contributes to the monitoring of fiscal and resource management Provides input to the Nursing Director on supply and equipment purchases; orders non-stock/stock supplies as needed Completes review of time and attendance records at appropriate intervals. Contributes to quality of patient care through Performance Improvement activities; formulates a Performance Improvement plan in conjunction with the Nursing Director, utilizing the results to improve professional practice and patient outcomes Shares Performance Improvement results with staff Follow up on patient complaints and family concerns in a timely manner. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information. Monitors Patient Satisfaction survey data.

Required Qualifications

Licensure: Current and valid Registered Nurse license in the State of Nebraska. Education : Bachelors degree from an accredited school of nursing is required. Masters degree and specialty certification preferred. Experience: Five years in the appropriate clinical specialty preferred.
