Job Summary Will utilize critical thinking skills to coordinate and plan holistic patient care, using the Nursing Process in accordance with the Indiana Nurse Practice Act. Job requires an extremely high level of independent judgment. The lead nurse will actively participate in and adheres to the Quality Improvement Objectives and Mission & Vision of St. Joseph Hospital. Will contribute to the development and achievements of unit based quality assurance goals. The lead RN will be responsible to ensure the smooth patient flow of the unit. The Lead nurse will be responsible to make appropriate patient assignments in regards to nursing skill mix and patient acuity. The Lead will serve as a resource to established department employees and house floats. The Lead will perform focused assessments on agency floats unless agency skills have been previously deemed appropriate. The Lead will be responsible for mentoring of new staff. The Lead responsibilities towards LPNs will ensure that Patient Data Base Assessment is completed and reviewed by an RN, and the IVP medications (not given by LPN) are administered in a timely manner. Will perform order entry and unit secretary functions as time allows. Responsible for compliance with overall nursing practice standards of the specialty area (reports to the department manager). Responsible for compliance with standards during assigned shift (reports to House Manager). Uses established principles of delegation and supervision to direct activities of all licensed and non-licensed care givers and support staff in the delivery of patient care during assigned shift.
