Job Description & Requirements

Develops and implements wound care program to include patient care protocols, documentation tools, wound care formulary and WOCN referral criteria. Promotes quality nursing practice and patient care in Ostomy, Wound and Skin Care Management. Respects rights, confidentiality and dignity of all patients. Assists nursing staff in planning and implementing appropriate skin care interventions. Meets with unit staff to ensure appropriate skin/wound care measures are in place, taking an active role in identifying needs and delivering care to patient population. Assists in the coordination and development of programs to meet the needs of the nursing staff in conjunction with staff educators. Participates in the development, implementation, on-going evaluation and revision of nursing procedures for patients with ostomies/wound/skin care needs. Provides ongoing in-services and training related to wound care, ostomies and incontinence, to include basic orientation to wound care program. Makes recommendations to the physician for changes to wound care orders, and provides evidence based research support as needed. Works with vendors to maintain cost-effective wound care formulary. Demonstrates responsibility for professional development. Updates knowledge and skills to maintain competency. Supervises the performance of the LPN’s, CNA’s and Nurse Technicians. Required Qualifications

Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center. Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position. Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the hospital's mission, values and commitment to compliance with all federal, state and regulatory laws. Exhibits professionalism, courtesy and excellent customer service, while interacting with patients, guests and co-workers. Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. Demonstrates excellence in skin and wound care management. Demonstrated competent teaching skills. Ability to train and support empowers all clinical staff to effectively assess wounds, recommend appropriate protocols, and advocates with physicians. Ability to communicate recent innovations and research findings to the staff and translates relevant scientific knowledge into nursing care. Maintains current knowledge related to the patient population in the areas of responsibility. Ability to function as a cohesive member of a team and demonstrated appropriate interaction with employees throughout the hospital. Able to adjust to peaks in workload; demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to change in a positive and cooperative manner. Ability to complete assignments in designated time frame. Ability to perform all roles and functions productively during emergency situations including Code Blue. BSN required. 3-5 year direct experience. Maryland State License. BLS certification, CPR. Certification in Enterostomal Therapy with preparation as a WOCN required.
